Electronic textiles (e-textiles) represent the merging of fabric and electronic technologies to be used in wearable and large-scale applications. The communication requirements of the computing elements of these systems will be presented along with a fault tolerant solution. The operation of the communication scheme will be studied analytically and compared to simulation results. The graceful deterioration of the performance with increasing faults will also be reported. Multiple e-textile application examples utilizing the networking scheme will be presented. 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Phase change materials for smart textiles – An overview

Phase change materials (PCM) take advantage of latent heat that can be stored or released from a material over a narrow temperature range. PCM possesses the ability to change their state with a certain temperature range. These materials absorb energy during the heating process as phase change takes place and release energy to the environment in the phase change range during a reverse cooling pr...

Study on Wicking Measurement in Thin Layer Textiles by Processing Digital Images

The purpose of this work is to assess and develop experimental techniques that allowwicking measurement over a wide range of textiles. Various kinds of fabrics, nonwoven layers and anelectro spinning nylon layer were used as the test materials. A syringe is used to drop a 0.02 g spot ofdistilled water on the sample and a digital camera to take pictures simultaneously. When the wickingprocess st...

Interactive Party Textiles

This paper describes the idea of using context aware soft furnishing for decorations. Textile has the ability to easily change the experience of an environment. This quality combined with the dynamics of ubiquitous computing and context awareness creates an interesting design space to investigate. The examples we show, a tablecloth and a drapery, are designed for use on festive and social event...

Indicator washcloth for detecting alkaline washing solutions to prevent dermatitis patients and babies from skin irritation

Introduction The development of smart textiles that yield information on the environment of human beings and their health status is very challenging. The integration of electronics into textiles has reached a high maturity for e.g. heating of napkins, shoe soles, gloves and seats. There have been many approaches to measure heart rate or blood pressure with sensors integrated into textiles (Cher...
